Amla or Indian gooseberry a, powerhouse of nutrients is a deciduous tree of the family Phyllanthaceae. The fruit has excessive use in Aurveda for prepration of medicines. Chyawanprash is an Ayurvedic health supplement which is made up of a Aamla, super-concentrated blend of nutrient-rich herbs, is meant to restore drained reserves of life force, and to preserve strength, stamina, and vitality, while stalling the course of aging. In the Buddhist tradition there are many references to the fruit. Half an amalaka fruit was the final gift to the Buddhist sangha by the great Indian emperor Ashoka. Ripening in autumn, the berries are harvested by hand after climbing to upper branches bearing the fruits. There are three main varieties of amla in India. The three sub-varieties are Chaikaya amla, Francis amla and Banarasi amala.
